Description Statement or Bill of Sale, printed in black ink on blue paper. On top half of paper is printed in black ink (from left to right): the Horsman Bros.' logo which a group of tools (such as a saw, hammer, chisel, items that could be purchased at their store) placed in a circle (2cm diameter). Beside the logo is printed: "BOUGHT OF HORSMAN BROTHERS IRONMONGERS." Above Horsman Brothers is printed their location: "GUELPH".
In small print below is: "Dealers in every description of Hardware, including Iron, Steel, Lead, Copper, Zinc, NAILS, Glass, Putty, PAINT of all Colors, Paint Oils, Turpentine, Varnish, COLORS, Pitch, Tar, Rosin, Rope, all sizes,; Hemp, Flax, Cotton and Linen Twines; Lamp, Machinery and Tanners' Oils; Coal Oil, Earth Oil, Rock Oil, Kerosene Oil, a variety of Lamps, Globes, Shades and Wicks; Mill-saws, Chains, Carriage Trimmings, Axles, Oil Cloth, Locks, Latches, Hinges, Guns, Pistols, Shot, Gun and Blasting Powder, Hair Cloth, Curled Hair, Coffin Furniture, Carpenters' and Coopers' Tools, Platform and Counter Scales, Cultivator Teeth, Spades, Shovels, Forks, Hoes, Rakes, Scythes, Cradles, & c.; Fire Grates, Stove Polish, Blacking, Lamps, Brushes, and every other article that should be kept in a Hardware Store. N.B. - Powder, in Wholesale Lots only, can be had at our Magazine, near the Town of Guelph. Powder in small quantities supplied at the Store as usual."
The Statement is addressed to "Mr. Thomas" and dated 4th August 1862", both handwritten in black ink at the top of the page.
Below this printed letterhead are three horizontal red lines, printed in red ink. Five vertical lines in red ink, extend from this horizontal red line, forming six columns of various widths. in the second column from the right side are hand-written the items purchased by Mr. Thomas: "5 Gallons Bd. Oil; / 25 ? Fireproof Paint / 1 1/2 " Chrome Yellow / 2 " Venetian Red / 1 " Burnt Umber / 2 " Chrome Green 75 cents, Paper Lamp Black 3 Cents / 3 Kegs White Lead / 1 Doz. Hat and Coat Hooks / 2 ? shot 20c. / Cannister Powder 50c. / 1 B???? / 1 Scythe." The prices are listed beside each item and the total is listed at $21.97.
