Description Envelope and stamp commemorating the 50th anniversary of the death of John McCrae. White paper with colour printing. Left third of front has "CANADA" in red in a brown banner above a circular graphic. Graphic has thin red exterior border, thick middle brown border and thin white interior border. Inside background green, with "1918" in white with thin brown border. Hand on left holding torch, handing to empty hand on right. Six white crosses with thin brown border below hands. Green foliage underneath graphic, with red poppies on either side. Below graphic in green is written: ""TO YOU WITH FAILING HANDS WE THROW/THE TORCH: BE YOURS TO HOLD IT HIGH"". Below this is a thick brown banner with red writing: "50 ANNIVERSARY of the death of JOHN McCRAE". Below in green writing: "FIRST DAY O ISSUE". Middle bottom brown sketch of two soldiers, one running across no-man's land, the other emerging from the trenches. Two explosions are visible in the distance, and another soldier appears to be falling next to the larger explosion. Above this is a circular stamp in black ink. Reads: "OTTAWA ONTARIO CANADA/ 15X/ 1968". Upper right corner stamp with thick green border. White writing in border: "CANADA POSTAGE POSTES" "5" "John McCrae/ 1872 - 1918". Colour portrait of John on right third of stamp. Artwork of field, smoke, poppies in middle of stamp. In John's Handwriting imposed on artwork: "In Flanders Fields" line underneath. "In Flanders fields the poppies blow/ Between the crosses, row on row." Black ink stamp over commemorative stamp: "DAY OF ISSUE/JOUR D'EMISSION" with three lines and maple leaf.
