The Year is dead/ The Ancient Monarch, grim and sere/ Bears off the griefs that filled the Past, / The clash of arms that marred the year.//
The Old Year's dead: Adown the corridors of Time, with shimmering scythe, in wrap of snow, / He takes out troubles and our woe, / And leaves us the glad Christmas chime. // The Young Year lives! / With joyous shout the rosy youth,/ From out the Future vague and dim, / With lusty lungs and fleet of limb,/ Brings Peace, Love, Purity and Truth.//
The Young Year lives! / The Past is dead: new hopes revive; The disappointments, grief and tears Lie buried in the numbered years - Lie in the grave of Eighty-Five.
Guelph, 1st January 1886."
Printed in blue on the right side of the fold is a calendar for 1886.
The back is blank.
