Black and white aerial photograph of Downtown Guelph, circa 1945. The photograph was taken by Raeburn Reid of Reid Flying Service. The photograph shows St. George's Square, taken from the south west looking North East. Quebec Street is shown running from the bottom left at the confluence of Paisley, Norfolk, Yarmouth and Quebec Streets to the middle right of the photograph. Visible beginning at the left side is the YMCA building facing Quebec St. at the corner of Yarmouth Street, Knox Church corner of Baker Street with Victoria Rink, and Steele's Wire and Spring Ltd. with a tall chimney behind the church. Chalmers Church is facing Quebec Street next to the Bank of Montreal on the north west corner of St. George's Square on Wyndham Street which is in the centre of the photograph running from near the top left to the right bottom corner. Douglas Street is running north east from St. George's Square from The Customs and Post Office building, which is facing St. George's Square, directly to the St. George's Church building which is backing on to the Canadian Pacific Railway lines next to the Speed River. The Speed River is frozen with the Heffernan Pedestrian Bridge visible. On the far right is the Speed Skating Rink which was being used by the C.P.R. as a warehouse next to the railway tracks. There are train cars on the tracks on the left and right of the photograph. Cork Street is running from the middle bottom to Wyndham Street and Macdonell Street is shown in the bottom right corner. Eramosa Road and the Bridge are visible on the top left side running north from Wyndham Street. Arthur Street is running from the top right side to the top left corner of the photograph. |
