Description |
Sepia toned photograph of a single storey home with a wrap around porch. The home has a pitched roof with two chimney's at the back on either side. The front and right side of the house are visible. The front door is in the middle with a window on each side. There is another window just around the corner of the house. On the back right side of the house there is a striped awning. The front facade has a roof that covers the length of the porch with detailed carvings at each corner. A set of stairs leads up to the front door as well as a smaller set from the road to the front lawn. A small tree sits at the base of the steps to the home. The home is raised off of the ground with lattice work covering the section below the porch. In the front yard of the house is a wicker couch and chair with a man sitting in the chair. The man is facing the right side of the image and is sitting with his legs crossed and holding a cane. He is wearing light coloured pants, a dark jacket, a bowler hat and appears to have a beard (possibly Clement Read?). The photograph is mounted on a grey backing with the photographers identification along the right side in red text. A portion of the name is cut off in the bottom right corner. The text reads "Hall, Guelph, Ont., Photographer", the beginning of Marshall is missing. The back is plain with various hand written notes covering the back. Written on back: In blue ink "Sunny Knoll-1880" The rest in pencil "Willard Marshall - photographer in Guelph from around 1861/62 until 1901? Corner of King and Pearl {faded or erased} Willard Marshall lived on Pearl in 1883 Sunny Knoll Portrait gallery, Clement L.
