Miniature jockstraps produced as samples for Guelph Elastic Hosiery at some point between 1970 to 1990. The two jockstraps are made from elastic. One of the jockstraps has black text (.1) that reads "His" along with three hearts. There is an orange tag on the back that reads "Protex / Athletic Support / Large / Made by Guelph Elastic / Guelph, Ontario, Canada.". The other jockstrap has red text (.2) that reads "Her" with three hearts. An orange tag on the back reads ""Protex / Athletic Support / Large / Made by Guelph Elastic / Guelph, Ontario, Canada.". |

Historic Context: Guelph Elastic Hosiery Company Limited Guelph Elastic Hosiery was opened by Joseph Cartledge in 1922. Cartledge employed 40 people in the factory and another 75 worked out of their homes. Initially, the company manufactured knit wear including sports sweaters and hockey stockings. The company name may not be all that recognizable outside of Guelph, yet one of their products is widely known in the sporting world. Joseph Cartledge worked with a physician to develop an athletic support, which is commonly known as the jock strap (a contest sponsored by Guelph Elastic Hosiery offered a five-dollar prize for the name). Cartledge held the world patent for this invention until 1956. In 1997, Guelph Elastic Hosiery was renamed Protexion Products. They were the leading manufacturers of sports and recreational apparel which included personal floatation devices and protective clothing. In January 2006 the company closed its doors due to financial difficulties. Updated 2025 |
