Description Portrait of Dr. Silvio L. Valeriote by Francis J. Haxby 1945. The painting is an oil on canvas bust portrait in a gold painted wooden frame. Valeriote sits in the middle aligned to the right. He is wearing a white button down shirt and bow-tie. Layered on top is a black robe that is open at the front. There is a green academic stole with a purple edge detail draped over his shoulders. The background of the image is simple with muted shades of brown, tan, red and green. Painted along the left edge is the Royal Canadian Army Medical Corps (now the Royal Canadian Medical Service) badge :a serpent around a staff encircled by maple leaves with a crown on top and "M. D." below. The artists signature appears in the bottom left corner "Francis J. Haxby 1945".
The wooden frame is painted gold and there is a filigree leaf design carved in each corner. There is a gold metal plaque attached to the front bottom middle. It reads "This Library furnished in memory of Dr. S. L. Valeriote by the Italian of Guelph and District whose names are enscrolled in a book in the library". There is a wire at the back of the frame for hanging. Currently the painting and frame are separated.
