Videotape of interview with Cynthia J. Stickland (born October 25, 1925), conducted on May 5, 1998 by Magali Meagher for the Guelph Social History Project. Interview with Cynthia Stickland about coming to Canada from the Caribbean, her first job, working at Bell telephone, union, her neighbourhood, downtown Guelph, festivals and dances in Guelph, sports, theatre, being black in Guelph, the Italians, etc. Detailed Summary of Interview (partial): Cynthia came to Guelph on July 27, 1955. As a woman from the Caribbean, she needed to be sponsored to emigrate. Her brother, who already lived in Guelph, had a very close friend that sponsored her to come to Canada and live in Guelph. She filed for unemployment when she first arrived and soon secured a job with Bell Canada, as a switch board operator, located on Cork Street. When asked about the kind of community Guelph was, Cynthia said that it was overall a good community and she was able to make many friends. When asked about dangerous areas in Guelph she mentioned The Ward, saying although "she never experienced anything bad there, some of her friends recalled feeling unsafe in some areas." She also briefly discussed the Italian community in The Ward. When asked about discrimination, she said she never personally felt discriminated against, but doesn't deny there was plenty of discrimination in Guelph. |
