Book "The Old Concession Road" by Thomas Laidlaw, 1899. Thomas Laidlaw (1825-1902) was Scottish settler who wrote about his experiences in Guelph's "Paisley Block". Laidlaw was born in Roxburghshire, Scotland and came to Wellington County in 1831. The book is hard cover with a black pebbled surface and red leather binding and corners. On the inside front cover is a label for Roswell Goldie and the next few blank pages of the book were filled by a letter written to Mr. Goldie by the author of the book Thomas Laidlaw. According to the letter, Laidlaw gave this book to Mr. Goldie as a thank you for the image he gave him of the old log school house which is at the beginning of the book. There is one other picture in the book - that of the pioneers of Paisley block. On the back cover is the obituary of Thomas Laidlaw with a note in pencil that it is from the Guelph Herald Oct. 15, 1902. Some notes were made by the author, after the book was published, and they are 1985.82.100. |
