Description |
Letter from Nancy Felicia (Howitt) Ward to Major George Everett Ward, dated 17 August 1943. A one page handwritten letter in blue ink on a blue Air Letter To Armed Forces. The letter reads: Major Geo. E. Ward, 8th Army Field Reg't., Royal Cdn. Artillery, Canadian Army O/S from Mrs. Geo. E. Ward, 221 Woolwich St., Guelph Ont. Aug. 17th 1943, Tuesday PX, (11.15 PM) George My Darling - Here I am toute seule at 221 but Mum should be turning up any minute - as for Bernice! I'm sure it won't be anything earlier than 2 AM even if it is just a movie date!! Dad is still out at Caledon but I think he will be coming in at the end of this week. Mum was in Toronto today & came back with Fiorenza and Uncle Edward - and went out to their place for dinner & the evening. Peggy (can't spell her last name) who is my age & wife of an officer up at No 4 Wireless School invited me up to their place for the evening & from where I've just come. She is a very attractive girl - blonde & definitely the sweet & natural type. Her husband Doug was there too - the three of us just sat and chatted and sipped two nice collins. They were married last October - just plain lucky devils being able to be together! - oh George Darling how I hope and pray our day isn't far off. Can't tell you Sweetie how excited and happy I am now that I have made a step in your direction - if only the Red Cross will get me over in P.D.Q. fashion. It was very encouraging to hear what Grace Cassels had to say about the Red Cross. How I wish I could surprise you & myself - and be early "for our date at the Savoy" - Darling. I don't give two hoots where it is we meet again as long as it will be sometime soon. It was wonderful news to hear about Messina this morning. The very thought of the outcome of the Churchill, Roosevelt & the chiefs of staff conference at Quebec this time frightens me all to pieces Darling. I was surprised when I read Beverley Banter's London letter in Maclean's (Aug 15th) that the plans for the invasion of Sicily were concluded at the Casablanca Conference!! "the night of Friday July 9th" (Our 2nd Anniversary!) everything that was planned was carried out in detail but jeepers Darling when you think of it - when those plans were laid Tunis had not fallen then!! [Page} two The way the casualty lists Sweetie have been coming through is simply disgraceful - I told you about Rosalyn Crowe hearing first about Ralph through an officer friend in London (Eng) via boat mail! And today the same thing happened with the Oslers about Bob - (with the 48th) a fellow officer had sent a cable to his family & they had heard absolutely nothing about it. There is a terrific mix-up somewhere & it must be straightened up soon. Bob's wife Betty had a baby boy shortly after he left. I was horribly shocked too Darling to hear that Chuck Waterous had been killed. I had never met him but I know you knew him. The hour is late Darling so I must tumble into bed now - a week from tomorrow I report in Toronto! Tomorrow will be my last day for the B. Donor's Clinic & the canteen. With ALL my love, kisses & hugs to you Always & forever my very own Darling Nan |
