Letter from Nancy Felicia (Howitt) Ward to Major George Everett Ward, dated 20 August 1943. A one-page handwritten letter in blue ink on a blue Air Letter To Armed Forces. The letter reads: Major George E. Ward, 8th Army field Reg't., Royal Cdn Artillery, Canadian Army from Mrs. Geo. E. Ward, 221 Woolwich St., Guelph - Ont. Aug 20th 1943, Friday -will be able to let you know next week or very soon more about how much this is going to cost Darling - I'll be doing it on the cheap as much as I possibly can. Hoping too I'll be able to buy my uniform second hand - (it is blue-gray) - but when selected for overseas they supply your overseas - uniform - khaki. B. Howitt was able to buy a uniform second hand - about $20.00. My Darling George - Yesterday I took the 9.15 AM train down to Toronto so I could straighten up the "place to board situation" and it is anything but an easy thing to do. However tiring & hectic as it was it turned out quite well. I am going to board at a Miss Burton's house - 51 Prince Arthur Ave. - Her house is very nice & my room is okay but she wants $9.00 a week!! - & this only includes breakfast!! Originally she wanted $10.50 but I talked her into knocking it down - thought it stinky of her to only chip a dollar off per week. Before I approached her I had whipped around to about eight other places - they were all just about the same price - or hell & gone from where I have to attend lectures - these were a little more reasonable but then they would add up to the same when it came to buying car - fare. Honor came along with me while I tooted from one to the other - I tried a Mrs. Floyd who lives at 218 Poplar Plains - & was very pleasantly surprised when I discovered she had a room that was just the right size for me (a day couch - couple of chairs & a desk) a very bright room & what appealed to me was the tiny kitchenette off one end. Her price appealed to me tremendously too - $4.25 a week! - just half what the other gal wanted - I'd have jumped on this immediately but another gal had it for a week or more - I could make my own breakfast (an orange, toast & coffee or milk) & have lunch & dinner in town or maybe whip them up myself sometime, It is a little farther away than I had planned from where I have to work but I can take the street car down in the morning - & always walk home after hrs in the late afternoon as it is not that far away. I wish I could move into 218 Poplar Plains on Wed. - but such is the way things go! I stayed with Honor overnight. Darling yesterday after I phoned Betty Ward - brought her up to date on the Red Cross business - I had lunch at 32 Hudson today - Alf came home for lunch - he doesn't as a rule - It was sincerely great to see them - I'm so thrilled they think it is a wonderful thing I'm trying the Red Cross in hopes to get over soon. I nearly fell over backwards when I saw Janet & Larry - they have shot up so since I saw them last. Larry running around & talking his head off! They are two very good looking & adorable children. - I am & always have been - very devoted to Alf & Betty - two perfect peaches. When I am living in Toronto it will be great having get togethers every now & then; because it has been simply awful how little we've seen each other in the past two years. I was talking to Florence Mary Eton yesterday afternoon - her husband is in Sicily - F.M. joined the transport last Sept! & is next on the list now for overseas! She told me herself the R. Cross sent very few M.T. gals over in comparison with the number of Food Admin & office Admin gals - She said I rated a much better chance with the Food Admin - Most of the R. Cross M.T. drivers are sent no farther than Newfoundland! - Issy Alyward [sic] is keyed up about the R.C. too - would like to start in with Betty & me. We came home on the train together tonight - she is sending her cable off to Jack tonight asking for his yes or no! - Please keep on sending your letters to 221 Darling until I tell you otherwise. The very best of luck in the world to you Darling & ALWAYS ALL my love to you Nan |
