Small black buckram bound soft cover book entitled "Merck's Manual Fourth Edition". The book is 493 pages long and serves as a medical reference book for physicians, nurses and technicians. There are several pieces of paper pinned to the inside pages of the book as well as just placed inside. The book is covered in black buckram which is a stiffened cloth material made of cotton or linen. Front Cover: Embossed across the top "Merck's Manual Fourth Edition". There are 4 inclusions which have been removed and stored in an accompanying envelope: 1. A note which was pinned to the first inside page, it is a formula for a prescription lotion. 2. A second note pinned to the title page. It is written on a Red Cross Pharmacy prescription page, it reads: "Red Cross Pharmacy. J. B. Broadfoot PHM. B., St. George's Sq. Guelph Phone 381" Below is a formula for a Dr. Macaulay from a Dr. Bennetto. 3. A third note is placed with the pages near the back of the book (pg 481). It is a folded over piece of paper written on The Metropolitan Bank, The Bank of Nova Scotia letterhead. It is a list of chemical ingredients. 4. A fourth note is pinned to the last page and is a formula for a "Dandruff Remedy" and a "Hair Tonic". Title Page: "Merck's Manual Fourth Edition". There is Publishers Page: "Fourth Edition, Merck's Manual of the Materia Medica, A reference pocket book for the physician and surgeon, {followed by a synopsis of the information found in the book}, Compiled from the most recent authoritative sources and published by Merck & CO. St. Louis, New York, Rahway 1911" The page following the publishers information requests that doctors send in suggestions and comments for future editions of the Merck Manual. At the bottom "Entered according to Act of Congress, in the year 1911, by Merck & Co., New York, in the Office of the Librarian of Congress, at Washington." The following page is the Preface with "Spring, 1911" in the bottom left corner. Table of Contents: The Table of Contents identifies the four sections of the book with a title, the page numbers and a brief descriptions of the information found in the chapter. the four sections are: "Pages 1 to 82, Part First - The Materia Medica, as in actual use to-day by American Physicians", "Pages 83 to 414, Part Second - Therapeutic Indications and prescription Formulas for the use of the Materia Medica; and Bedside Diagnosis", "Pages 415 to 424, Part Third - Classification of Medicaments", "Pages 425 to 493, Part Fourth - Miscellany". |
