Notes |
Historic Context - Guelph Royalaires The Guelph Royalaires Drum & Bugle Corps can trace originated in 1932 when a group of WWI Veterans sough to increase their musical knowledge while maintaining their military training and social connections. The corps eventually became the 11th Field Regiment (RCA) marching band. The band won several Canadian Standstill Championships in the early 1950s. In 1954 the corps opened its ranks to community members and adopted the name Royalaires in honour of the Royal City. In the 1950s, the corps adopted a "Love Theme" with their acquisition of their unique cadet-style cream, red and gold uniforms and shakos featuring white feather plums. The group became well known for their appearance, precise marking, and repertoire. The "heart" drill formation became their signature and eventually lead to the group coming known as "The Corps with the Heart". The Royalaires secured six consecutive national titles form 1959-1964, a feat unmatched in Senior Canadian Drum & Bugle Corps history. Throughout these golden years, the group was led by Drum Major Stan Briggs, who was later inducted into the World Drum Corps Hall of Fame. The Royalaires continued to field competitive corps through the late 1960s, an won the National Championships in 1968 and 1969. The Royalaires continued performing through the 1970s and 1980s despite rising travel and instrumentation costs. Eventually the corps withdrew from competition in the 1990s but continued as a popular parade corps, performing through Southwestern Ontario into the 2000s. The Royalaires continue to operate today and is the longest continuously operating drum & bugle corps in Canada. Updated 2023 |
