Description |
Videotape of interview with Roland Hewer (born on November 16, 1919) on 11 June 1998 conducted by Charlie Pullen for the Guelph Social History Project. Hewerr shares memories of growing up in Guelph, school, social life, work, dating, The Depression, WWII, Italian community, sports, unions, and Downtown Guelph. Detailed Summary: Roland Hewer's maternal grandparents moved to Guelph from England after the First World War, where they would settle. Hewer's maternal grandfather worked as a road superintendent for many years. His father's family came over "from the old country" in the 1800s. Hewer's paternal grandfather was the Mayor of Guelph for a period, during the 1900s. His father was in the clothing business - as a boy, his father was water carrier, running water up to Keller and Henley's on Wyndham Street. Roland Hewer grew up at 163 Waterloo Avenue, near Ferguson Street. They lived in a nice, large house and his elementary school was right down the street. Hewer attended Guelph Collegiate (high school) and played a lot of hockey and baseball. In 1939, he was on the Junior Championship Hockey team who played at Exhibition Park. Hewer's family was very involved with the Guelph Musical Society (GMS); his grandfather played the drums. |
