Description |
Letter from Nancy Felicia (Howitt) Ward to Major George Everett Ward, dated 11 August 1943. A one-page handwritten letter in blue ink on a blue Air Letter To Armed Forces. The letter reads: Major George E. Ward, 8th Army Field Reg't., Royal Canadian Artillery, Canadian Army from Mrs. Geo. E. Ward, 221 Woolwich St., Guelph, Ont. August 11th/43, Wednesday, 2.45PM My Darling George- Mum's friend Irene Torrence came up yesterday from Toronto to spend a couple of days with us. We have just had lunch out in the garden with several of their friends - we have turned into great "ol' picnicers" around 221. Darling 2 wks from today I start lectures & what not with the Red Cross - This morning was "Clinic Morning" starting off at 7.45 - we had about ninety doners [sic] which is quite good. Helen Gamble was a donor & I'm jealous because they took 50 cc's more from her than they did from me! Mrs. Fraser was going to motor down to Hamilton on Tues. & offered me a lift down. I phoned your Father Monday night to tell him I was coming down but got no answer. Phoned Jean & she told me he was up at the cottage. Jean & I planned to meet at 11.30 AM but then late Monday night I got the message that Georgie wasn't going down & as Mum was expecting Irene & wanted me here for dinner I had to phone Jean & tell her I couldn't make it. Darling this has been one hellova of [sic] a week one terrific blow after the other - Sunday afternoon Mr. Campbell MacLaughlin (great friend of Dad's) phoned to tell us their youngest boy Edward was killed in Sicily on the 15th of July. He was with the 48th Highlanders - Charles Tidy is with the same regiment - then yesterday we were terribly shocked to hear about Ralph Crowe!! The way the sad news was broken to Rosie was simply horrible - She received a letter of sympathy from an officer in England dated the 30th of July!! But poor Darling had heard nothing about it thro' Ottawa - Archie Campbell phoned someone in Ottawa for her - they checked & at 2 PM he phoned back to say it was not true - Then yesterday after lunch she received word it was true!! & in the meantime she had written to this lad to tell him how happy she was to hear he was mistaken! - Her Mother & Father are living in Cobourg - they motored up at breakneck speed to be with her. Aim was with Rosie all afternoon until 5.30 - & I stayed with her until nearly eight PM when her parents arrived. Oh, Darling I can't tell you how wonderful she is - you know Ralph had never seen their youngest baby - a girl - Yesterday she was such a wonderful soldier - & I was such a poor one. I put her children to bed because poor Rosylin couldn't bear to do it - I tried to help her out as best I could but I felt so bloody helpless & then not being able to keep the tears back made me so mad at myself. George Darling if you would drop her a note I know it would mean so much - her address is 22 Tiffany St E. Please Darling don't ever, ever forget I love you, love you more than anything in this world & please, please take good care of yourself always. Must close here with all my love kisses & hugs to you George Darling forever & always - Nan |
