Historic Context: No. 3 Canadian General Hospital No. 3 Canadian General Hospital in France was organized shortly after the outbreak of WWI and was particularly a product of McGill University. It was mobilized under Col. H.S. Birkett in Montreal. On May 5, 1915 staff sailed from Montreal on the S.S. Metagama to be relocated in France. They landed in England on May 15 and were for one month stationed at Shorncliffe and employed on duty at Moore Barracks. Transferred to France, No. 3 Canadian General Hospital (McGill) first operated at Dannes-Camiers for a year (June 19, 1915 to July 5, 1916). It was then moved to the former Jesuit College at Boulogne for the duration of the war (July 6, 1916-May 29, 1919). No. 3 General Hospital was initially planned with a capacity of 520 beds, but this was increased to 1500 beds by 1916, and 2000 beds by 1918. The personnel at the time of sailing from Montreal to Europe consisted of 35 Officers, 73 Nursing Sisters and 190 Rank & File. These numbers went up and down throughout the war. John McCrae was a doctor at the No. 3 Canadian General Hospital in Boulogne from 1916-1918. |
