Description |
Letter from Alfred H. Ward to Major George Everett Ward, dated 16 June 1943. A one-page typewritten letter in black ink on a blue Air Letter To Armed Forces. The letter reads: Major George E. Ward, 8th Army Field Regiment, R.C.A., Canadian Army, England from A.H. Ward, 69 Glenfern Ave, Hamilton, Ont. Hamilton, June 16, 1943 Dear George;- My last letter was sent you May 31st and I have since sent two small parcels, also the usual 600 Sweet Caps on 4th inst. On 12th I mailed you the two suits of pyjamas which we procured from McGregor's, and hope these will fit you nicely, and although you do not usually I hope parade in them still it is well to have them a proper fit. Little Dadie has had a recurrence of his hernia and this time on the other side, so they are to take him to the hospital tomorrow for an operation to correct it. Ken Murray is to operate and we are trusting that all will be well with him, though the regulations are that the parents will not be allowed to see him for ten days after. This seems hard. At last we have news of Stuart. On Sunday 13th I received a cable message from Jean to say that "Tokio radio broadcast Stuart prisoner of war; no details available." Wherever he is, we at least know now that he is alive and has survived the tropical diseases that are rampant in Malaya. Apparently, this the only way that the Japs will allow news of prisoners to go out. It is now 16 months since the fall of Singapore and while it seems a long time to us, we cannot even imagine how interminable it has been to him. May the time soon come when he will be returned to his wife and also to us. Ferdy Slater called on me again but I happened to be out and missed him. He left a card to say that he is not going back to England but will go to B.C. Probably Gordon Head I fancy. He asked me to send you his best regards. Miss McKindsey's nephew Tom Pethick has been reported missing. Apparently he had recently been doing some bomber work and they ae anxiously awaiting word of his fate. Have been busy at the warehouse and have arranged for a boy to come in to help out during the summer season. He is at Westdale school until 18th and will then report to us. We find that we can now get more of the #7 5 Bail Handles from Schmid and he can help with assembling these and also packing at the warehouse. We are also to get about 150 Pieces of Vicuna from the Canadian mill, but they will be allowed to dye these in brown and Navy blue only - the Army and Navy colours. However they are selling, and that is the main thing. Have not seen Nancy but recently I met Amy down town as she had come to this city to obtain a pass-port to Buffalo. I asked her to lunch but she was going back directly. We are all thinking of you now, even more than ever and send you our very best. Affectionately, Dad. |
