Description |
Letter from Nancy Felicia (Howitt) Ward to Major George Everett Ward, dated 15 July 1943. A one-page handwritten letter in blue ink on a blue Air Letter To Armed forces. The letter reads: Major George E. Ward, 8th Army Field Reg't., Royal Canadian Artillery, Canadian Army from Mrs. Geo E. Ward, 221 Woolwich St., Guelph, Ontario July 15, 1943, Thursday This afternoon I got busy on the album Darling and thrilled to say it is up to date. - What happened to that picture of yourself you were going to have enlarged??? This time two years ago we were living on St. George Street in Surrey N.B.!! George My Darling - Yesterday I got your sweet letter of June 29th - and nearly wept too when I read your Scotch got broken en route Darling! - damn and a double G.D. - just plain rotten luck. George Darling your lovely red roses were brought to the house shortly before noon on the 9th - It was so sweet of you to send them and thank you a million times over Darling. It was not an easy day to get through, my thoughts were with July 9th 1941 and just wondering and wondering at the same time how you were and what you were doing this July 9th - Honestly Darling if I were to love you and miss you more than I do - I'd have to be two. On the morning of the 10th around 8 AM Mum came dashing into my room to tell me the Canadians had landed in Sicily & MacKenzie King was speaking!!!! I flew off my bed and I'm sure I made Mother's room in about one jump - we listened to his speech and another news broadcast. Darling it is the suspense and not knowing where you are or what is up that is so damn hard to take. Rosie Crowe was convinced Ralph was there and on Tuesday she got his buttons and insignias!! He apparently had just sent them out with a friend. To think the whole business started on the night of our second wedding anniversary!! Last Thursday Mum, Betty Howitt and I went down to Toronto for the day - Betty & I went to the Red Cross Headquarters & had a great interview. I have signed up with the Food Admin Darling (Storms was with this for awhile) Betty with the office Admin which is up her alley as she has worked for Sutherlands (insurance) for three years. Betty is starting on Aug 2nd and I go down on the 1st of Sept. - which seems a hellova long way off but their (Food Admin) lectures etc start afresh then. Betty and I walked for miles trapseing [sic] around from one recommended boarding house to another and without much success. I'm terribly disappointed I can't stay at the "Sherbourne Club" - they have a 'new ruling' which bars married girls! - Betty is going to stay there for a month but is not sure if they can keep her there longer as they are filled to capacity. Now I am really up a gum tree Darling about what on earth would by my wisest move [Page] two -to stay put or go ahead with the Red Cross? It is going to entail a bit of expense & when there is no definite guarantee on their sending you over it really makes you think several times about it and especially now that things have started. This certainly doesn't sound patriotic Sweetie but I think you know what I mean. When I read your card Darling enclosed with the flowers I just let out one hoop of delight - Jeepers Sweetie you have no idea how I'm ALL for the quickest way over - I got a great big fat letter from Stormy - she just told me about clothes I should bring but no dope on the Red Cross. Thanks for making her write Darling because if and when the time comes what she told me will help out no end. Her language in parts just about threw me - it made me laugh because at B.S.S. our vocabulary used to get the better of us every now & then and I could see she hasn't changed a bit (mine hasn't improved either) Mum is in Toronto [to]day with Fiorenza. I've been left in charge of 221 again! Bernice & the office girl are still on their holidays - & boysie I'm going to greet them with open arms when they come back. I was going to go up to Kynocks this week but can't make it now 'till sometime around the 23rd. A small batch of Dutchmen left for England last night - I gave an old boy, Capt Tap your address Sweetie so he might be turning up I hope you got my cable I sent for the 9th Darling ALL my love, kisses & hugs to you Darling God Bless you & the very best of luck Nan |
