Description |
Letter from Nancy Felicia (Howitt) Ward to Major George Everett Ward, dated 5 July 1943. A one page handwritten letter in blue ink on an blue Air Letter To Armed Forces. The letter reads: Major Geo E. Ward, 8th Army Field Reg't, Royal Canadian Artillery, Canadian Army from Mrs. Geo E. Ward, 221 Woolwich St., Guelph, Ontario. July 5th 1943. George My Darling - Last night I wrote you a very lengthy epistle Sweetie - "three" continuous blue forms! I tried to tell you as much as I know about the Red Cross and set you straight on several things that your blue forms of the 9th and 10th had intimated I had left you up a green tree about. Darling I am terribly sorry I am so terrifically vague in my letters. As you already know letter writing is definitely not one of my strong points and what's more I'm inclined to be horribly vague anyhoo! - you have mentioned several times your letters must seem stilted - anything but Darling - the only time I blow a fuse is when you forget to sign your name!! This Thursday Mum and I are going down to Toronto - (the 8th the day before our second anniversary I think Betty Howitt and Aim might be joining us. I am going to spend my time in Toronto tracking down Mrs. Garrow who apparently has a lot to do with the Red Cross and a Miss Bollard who runs the Sherbourne Club (where I hope to board). I only wish I could 'start in' right away - but as I promised Mum I'd keep August free I don't see how I possibly can - because if Aunt Grace comes home from the hospital Mother feels she will have to be there 99.9% of the time & I'll have to be at 221 to see that all is okay here. Tonight Fiorenza, Aim and Betty Howitt were in. We had a quiet little hen party on the upstairs verandah - horned into a couple of drinks of rye on Henry! Fiorenza is in town with her chilluns but is more or less left in the lirch [sic] because George is away & busy on this coming election!! I had a letter from Betty Kynock the other day. She has invited me up (to their cottage) - at any time - for any length of time (which is a mighty nice invitation) but as plans are now Darling I am counting on leaving on the 20th of this month and staying till the 4th of August with them. I laughed when Betty said in her letter "prepare yourself for a shock - we are going to have a "sink" in our kitchen this summer!" The Kynock's have a peach of a "spot" not far from Penetang but boysie! One really has to "rough it" when they are up there. - Last year, and this year will be more so - we'll not be able to motor into Penetang for supplies - paddle three miles for such things but it is a lot of fun in doing this, your Father invited me up to your cottage this summer Darling. I am hoping I'll be able to go even if it is just for a long weekend. But the way things stand now I honestly don't know what the hell my plans are - living under the roof of 221 I feel I've got to "side in" in the way it will be most convenient for them. It is mid-nightish George Darling and my eyelids almost need props to keep them open so I must away here - with ALL my love, kisses and hugs to you ALWAYS Darling - and the very best of luck in this world to you too Ever your own Nan/ [handwritten on the outside edge] T'was 2 yrs. ago tonight I met you at the station in Hamilton Darling - whoof!! |
