Description |
Letter from Nancy Felicia (Howitt) Ward to Major George Everett Ward, dated 8 June 1943. A one-page handwritten letter in blue ink on a blue Air Letter To Armed Forces. The letter reads: Major George E. Ward, 8th Army Field Reg.t, Royal Canadian Artillery, Canadian Army Overseas from Mrs. Geo. E. Ward, 221 Woolwich St., Guelph, Ont. June 8th 1943, Wednesday Darling - these blue forms are supposed to be continuous despite the fact there is a long gap of three days between them. I ran flat out of these forms on Sat. Sweetie so hence the long continuation. Last night we saw a troop train pull out - and in the direction I have been longing and longing to go. Darling I'm afraid it completely threw me and haven't been able to rise above the 'blues' it left me with. Georgie Fraser & Aim were over tonight, - during the evening we polished off a couple of collins which only gave me a very temporary lift. George Darling you must be tired of my old way of expressing it but I love you and miss you beyond words and you're just my everything in this world. The chap steen - I have mentioned before to you left last night. It was extremely hard on him because he was separated from one of his closest friends - Knulst whom he has been thicker than thick with for seven years! Monday night a farewell party was thrown for Steen by a very nice Dutch man and his wife who have an apartment in town. Betty Howitt, Judy Pirie & Helen Gamble were in the party too - It started off with cocktails at their place then on to the Cutten Club for dinner and from there on to Judy's apt. for dancing as there was no dancing Mon 1x at the Highlands. Steen left with ever so many nice things for his fiancé - material for dresses, undies etc. which I tried to help buy for him. I think it is terribly pathetic because he hasn't heard from her since, Nov. (she is in Holland) I admire his optimism but must confess it frightens me. He took over a small bottle of scotch for me - for you Darling. I am hoping it will reach you in tact and you will be able to have a 'spot' of fun killing it. June the first we were clamped a little bit tighter on the "hootch ration". It stands at 53 oz per month which is nothing to squawk about - considering what goes on in the rest of this crazy upside down world! Helen Morrison's brother was married Sat. and Helen was able to be here for the wedding. Her presence came as one total surprise to her Mother & Father. Had a long chin wag with her over the phone Sat. and saw her for a couple of minutes before she had to away again on Sunday afternoon. Helen Gamble is working on getting down to Washington too. I have had it [in] mind for ages but have been torn be'twixt and between about it. George Darling I wish you would give me a shove one way or the other to busy myself to get over to England in the fastest way possible or to stay put on this side with a job that will keep me busy from morn' till night. Darling you know your word pulls more weight with me than anybody's in this whole wide world so please come to the fore and help me. The way things remain now I am divinely happy I'm your wife but deep down in my heart feel I am not doing enough - living a very cloistered and stagnate existence Darling. Hoping to hear your definite opinion on this one way or the other Sweetie - ALL my love Nan P.S. Amy B. H.O and Amy G send their love to you Darling - I didn't express myself very well here Sweetie but I think and hope you know what I mean. Many, many thanks again for the beautiful flowers and "Little Joe and his dog" |
