Description |
Notebook used by William Charles Thain from 1897-1898. The notebook was printed with compliments of the Confederation Life Association of Toronto, presented by the Guelph Agent, George Christie. The inside cover, first two pages and last page are printed with advertisements for the Confederation Life Association. The remainder of the notebook is filled with handwritten notes by William Thain. The notebook contains a list of violin lessons given in 1897, noting the name of the student, date of the lesson and who has paid for the instruction. The last page is stamped in blue ink with a stamp which reads "Wm. C. Thain, Royal City Orchestra, Guelph, Ont.". |

Biographical Context - William Charles Thain William Charles Thain was born 15 September 1984 to Charles (1829-1900) and Isabel (Gauld) Thain (1830-1912). William was the youngest of eight children though four of his siblings died in childhood. William taught violin in Guelph for decades, having as many as 60 pupils at a time in his classes. In 1905, he became the leader of the orchestra at the Guelph Opera House, where many leading artists of the time performed. Thain was also a proficient piper and played many engagements with the Highlanders' Pipe Band of Toronto. William never married but was close with his nieces and nephews, frequently visiting the family in Toronto. He died suddenly at the Guelph General Hospital on 17 February 1959 at the age of 85 years. He is interred at the Woodlawn Memorial Park |
