Postcard featuring a black and white photograph of the Canadian Women's Army Corps (CWAC) map reading class in Ste-Annes in 1943. The photograph shows two students and an instructor leaning over documents on the table. All are wearing CWAC uniforms. Sadie Fletcher's (on right) uniform has sergeant stripes visible. Two caps are set on the table in the foreground. Other students are in the background. A handwritten caption in the white boarder at the top of the image reads "Map Reading Course, Ste-Annes 1943". |

Historic Context: Canadian Women's Army Corps (CWAC) was established in 1941. In the beginning, there were no uniforms and the recruits wore armbands over civilian clothing. Sadie Fletcher was the first Guelph woman to join the Canadian Women's Army Corp. She enlisted as an army quantity cook. Before enlisting, she worked at the Ontario Agricultural College. Sworn in at London, Trafalgar Hospital (A school made into a 100 bed army hospital). She went overseas but it is uncertain where. |
