Letter from Nancy Felicia (Howitt) Ward to Major George Everett Ward, dated 23 April 1943. A one-page handwritten letter in blue ink on a blue Air Letter to Armed Forces. The letter reads: Major George E. Ward, No. 1 Canadian Artillery, Reinforcement Unit, Canadian Army Overseas [above second and third lines crossed out in green ink] [replaced by] 8th Fld Regt. 2.5.43 PK From: Mrs. George E Ward, 221 Woolwich Street, Guelph, Ontario April 23rd 1943, Good Friday Darling- Mum had an airgraph from Dick this week & he said he had had a letter from you re the two of you getting together on leave which was due this week. I have been thinking & thinking of you Darling and wondering if you are at the Imperial again. Hope the weather is in your favour because it certainly goes a long way in helping to make it more pleasant. Pat Dawson told me Dudley was expecting to away to Torquay this week too. We have had God-awful weather all this month up until yesterday! Di Tidy invited me down to Montreal for this weekend & I had one hard time trying to hold back on it. Di phoned me Wed PX to say she had made my reservation but after much debating it wasn't until 6 PM that night I finally decided against it. The Drews are in town this weekend and are popping in to-night. Bernice is out and Mum, Dad & Georgie Fraser who was here for dinner have gone off to the early movie "Desert Victory" which I hear is darn good & I'm looking forward to seeing it sometime this weekend. Have just washed my hair & taken a bath - had the doorbell or telephone rung they would have found nobody at home! Last Fri. Maj. Carp had a cocktail party in the mess - 35 guests & 15 bottles of that stuff called liquor were consumed!!! + two tins of tomato juice - and one guess who drank that Darling? - the Buckinghams. The officers have an awfully nice mess down at the Princes Juliana Kazerne (sp) - Dutch for Barracks! They have a nifty bar - as you know something we haven't got in this Prov. And how I adore sitting up at one! Yesterday Helen Morrison and I took to our bikes and wheeled around till we were ready to drop. Helen is trying to get a job down in Washington - expects to hear the verdict this week - the suspense has her standing on her ear. Aunt Grace seems to be doing quite well Darling - they are giving her transfusions about every third day. It will be two this Tues since the operation & the first two wks are the most dangerous - Dr. Wookie seems pleased with the way she is coming along. 25th Easter Sunday - Darling, Georgie, Fiorenza & George & Aim blew in with Mum & Dad so I had to call it a halt and away to greet them but stayed downstairs and had two "ryes & ginger" too! Yesterday morning Sweetie around 9.30 when I answered the door a little boy shoved a colossal box into my arms. My Darling they are the most beautiful flowers I have ever seen in my life and your card did something to my heart I can't express. It was so sweet & thoughtful of you Darling to send them - ever, ever so many thanks Sweetie. Then at 10.30 the postie brought me your airgraph of the 5th and blue form of the 11th. So all in all it was a magnificent day for me - had me in the highest of spirits - I feel simply awful though for not sending you the cable I had planned on sending - when I thought you were on leave Darling I had decided to wait until this week. Do hope you had fun in London and did a spot of sight seeing on the side too. Ohh! Darling you have no idea how I long to be with you especially when I know you are on leave. I love you and miss you more than words can say but Boysie! How we are going to make up all this time we have been forced to be apart. In less than three months it will be two years - oh God! But hard as this is to take I'm still so glad we went ahead with our plans Darling & didn't wait. Only mad we waited so long. WHY didn't we get married at Christmas time? That is what I have always been asking myself. Tomorrow Mum, Aunt Bid Howitt & I are going down to Toronto for the day - Mum & I are going to see Aunt Grace - & we are having lunch with Mrs. Keyes & Honor - I haven't seen Honor for over 3 mos! [Page] Four Friday a nice Netherlander and I went to Niagara Falls for the day. Left at 8 and were back for 6.30. He had bought his car just a month or so ago in Detroit & wanted to investigate about taking it across the border & look into the gas situation. DRIVING to Niagara Falls & back to [sic]! That was something I didn't think happened anymore! I sent you a PC Darling which should turn up eventually. Tues. Helen M & I are counting on spending the day in Hamilton so I am hoping I'll see your Father. This morning Mum, Aim and I went to the eight o'clock service together & you were in my heart & prayers throughout the whole service Darling. I didn't go to church at 11 o'clock because I felt like the devil - thought I was in for an A1 cold but feel better tonight. Sat night Aim, Evelyn Dunbar & I saw the movie "Desert Victory" thought it very good but it scared the living day lights [out] of me knowing it wasn't just [a] play - Good night Darling & ever, ever so many thanks again for the lovely flowers Sweetie - ALL my love hugs & kisses to you ALWAYS George Darling & God Bless you - Nan |
