Small newspaper clipping, cut out of the Toronto Star, of the obituary of musician, Charles Kelly. The clipping says that it is a special to the Star and is dated January 26 but no year. The clipping reads: "Musician of Guelph Charles Kelly Dies Instructor, 92, gave tenor Edward Johnson first lesson Special to the Star Guelph, Jan. 26 - Charles Kelly, 92, widely known Guelph musician died at his home here. Professor Kelly had a distinguished career and was known across Canada. He gave Edward Johnson, famous Guelph born tenor, now general manager of the metropolitan Opera Company, New York, his first music lesson. So impressed was he with Johnson's music talent at that time that he suggested that the younger man make music his career. Johnson took his advice and became one of the greatest operatic tenors in the world. Born in Kingston, Professor Kelly came to Guelph 47 years ago and resided here since that time. For 25 years he was choir leader at Knox Presbyterian Church. Professor Kelly took a great interest in all athletic activities, and as a youth was a boxer. He was a life member of Waverly Lodge, A.F. & A.M. and Guelph Chapter No. 40, Royal Arch masons. Married twice, he is survived by four sons, George, Buffalo, N.Y.; Charles, Toronto; Reginald, Detroit; Harry, Guelph, and two daughters, Miss hattie R. Kelly and Miss Madeline Kelly, Guelph." |
