Description |
Letter from Nancy Felicia (Howitt) Ward to Major George Everett Ward, dated 12 June 1943. A one-page handwritten letter in blue ink on a blue Air Letter To Armed Forces. The letter reads: Major George E. Ward, 8th Army Field Reg't, Royal Canadian Artillery, Canadian Army Overseas from Mrs. Geo. E. Ward, 221 Woolwich St, Guelph, Ont. June 12th/43 My Darling - I should be 'oping into to [sic] bed because the hour has it midnight and I'm a little bit weary too but want to drop you a note before I fall in, - It is raining to be all get out just now and there is a refreshing breeze - something we have been longing for and needed all day. Well, Art Kearns is a married man of a few hours! I wish I could have seen him to talk to the other night when I went over to his house but Ned's sweet phone call was thrilling and helped out a bit. This afternoon when Pat Hamilton and I were in town on our bikes I embarrassed some young, nice looking 2/Lt with a 3rd Div patch up - I'm sure because when I spotted the patch I yelled out to him "which Reg't?" - he blushed & came over. Told me it was a long story - didn't go over with a Reg't but when he told me he was an engineer - I lost all interest but was disappointed as the devil he was not artillery & hadn't some connection with the old 12th - Darling you must think I'm wacky but I have done this sort of thing on several occasion [sic] just hoping against hope I'll hit on some one who know [sic] you or has even heard of you - If and when I eventually do hit on the right person - so help them! - because I'll probably be half a step behind a fit with excitement. Tomorrow is going to be early communion - In the afternoon Aunt Nora (Mrs Eton Howitt) is having a fairly large tea for Bill & Ruth Howitt and then at 7 P.M. over to Aunt Win's (Mrs Harry Howitts) for supper - for the Bill Howitt's too I believe. A party of eight was cooked up for the Highlands tonight but original plans were scuppered and I'm rather glad because as I've already mentioned I'm suffering from fatigue and it is not a nice night out. Today is Dick's birthday! I am wondering how he spent it. Mum thought he was 27 until I checked her up on this - can always remember his age because he is five years my senior. Georgie Fraser & Mrs. Christie were in tonight. We sat out in the garden till the score between the mosquitos & ourselves became 10 - 1 in favour of the mosquitos - then we adjourned to the living room. Georgie told a 'little one' tonight - here is hoping I have it right - "What are shoulder straps?" - things to prevent an attraction from becoming a sensation! - rather good or true eh? Issy Aylward had a cable from Jack today telling her he has been moved to the 15th Field Reg't - Issy and I go around hoping and praying our 'next cable' will be the one to bring the wonderful news - they are sending you and Jack back Darling - BUT - up to date we haven't been lucky gals. Crawling into bed now Geo. Darling - Do you know I kiss your picture every night & at the same time I say a little prayer before I turn out my light? Or have I told you this? Good night Darling ALL my love Always - Nancy |
