From Guelph Arts Council brochure "Public Art in Guelph" 2008 "This brushed stainless steel sculpture, designed and executed by Hillsdale sculptor John McEwen, was Guelph's official Millenium project. The elevated, open canoe shaped structure carries a cargo of personal submissions such as photos, letters or other mementos of Guelph citizens. McEwen felt that the canoe was an appropriate Millenium symbol, pointing as it does, "both to where it is going and where it has been." Dedicated on April 23, 2001, the sculpture was intalled in John Galt Park parallel to the river so that the canoe's ribs could "animate the river" and "bring it in and out of focus" for those walking or driving by. |
