Description |
Negative strip with four black and white images, all close ups of storefronts on Wyndham Street, circa 1975. The stores in the image include: Robert K. Smith, Ostranders, Lees, Apollo Restaurant, Mr. Sub. The first two photos are three storey stone buildings. The third picture is of the top three stories of the Petrie Building. The last image is the Apollo Restaurant's storefront. These stores make up #15-25 Wyndham Street. Petrie Building (15 Wyndham Street): The 4-storey Petrie Buildings' cast-iron facade, with its elaborate cornice framing a giant druggist's mortar and pestle of metal-covered wood, is one of the most unusual architectural features of Guelph's business District. Made of galvanized, pressed and cast metal, the prefabricated wall is believed to have been produced by Bakewell and Mullins of Salem, Ohio. This building was constructed as the result of a joint venture between A.B. Petrie and W.H. Cutten relating to the site of the former Great Western Hotel (1854-1880). Petrie took responsibility for the N portion (#15) which, when completed in 1882, became the location of his drug store and manufacturing business. Coulson Block (17-21 Wyndham Street): The three stores at #17-21 are the remaining southern units of the three-storey stone stores erected by Day and Heffernan in 1855-56. The well-known jewellery firm Savage and Company, whose wooden watch of black, white and gold hung above the street, remained in operation at #19 for over a century. |
