Black and white aerial photograph of Downtown Guelph from the North East, circa 1945. The photograph was taken by Raeburn Reid of Reid Flying Service. The photograph shows downtown Guelph area taken from North East looking West. Speed River is in foreground running from the Left beginning with Allan's Bridge, running directly across to the Right with the Heffernan Street Pedestrian Bridge in the centre and the Eramosa Bridge to the Right. The Canadian National Railway tracks on Allan's Bridge are running diagonally (West) up behind the Railway Station and City Hall on the Right on Carden Street, and the Armoury on the left on Wyndham Street over the Wyndham Street Bridge continuing over the Norfolk Street Underpass Bridge to the Right corner of the photograph. The Guelph City Gas Works are visible on Surrey Street in the near top Left corner. In the top Centre visible is the Church of Our Lady, and Central School with Alexandra School to the Right. St. George's Square is directly in the Centre. The Speed Skating Rink being used as a warehouse for the C.P.R. is visible on the edge of the Railway Tracks running from the Left at Allan's Bridge directly across on the West side of the Speed River to the Right side of the photograph. The Canadian Pacific Railway Station is visible to the Right of the Eramosa Road Bridge along the West Side of the Speed River. The Guelph Collegiate Vocational Institute is visible on the Right edge below the corner. |
