.1 - Photograph (of oil painting- dated circa 1910) of Admiral Sir Charles Edmund Kingsmill, originally donated to the City of Guelph by the Royal Canadian Naval Association. Kingsmill is dressed in a rear-admiral or vice admiral uniform ( he was not promoted to the rank of admiral until April 3, 1917) and wearing his various medals, which included the Egyptian Bronze Star, the Egyptian Medal, the decoration of an Officer of the French Legion of Honour, and the Star of a Grand Officer of the Crown of Italy. The original painting is dated circa 1910. 1910 was the year that Kingsmill had been appointed the first director of the Naval Service of Canada. Kingsmill had played a prominent role in the negotiations leading up to the Royal Canadian Navy's formation. Printed below the photograph: "Admiral Sir Charles Edmond Kingsmill/ Born July 7, 1855. Guelph Ont." On the reverse of the mounted photograph is taped a one page biography of the life of Admiral Kingsmill. |
