Notes |
Historic Context - Fire at 128 Carden Street, 1946 Shortly after 5:00pm on 26 January 1946, a fire started on the fifth floor of the Holman Luggage Limited factory at 128 Carden Street. It is believed that the fire started in the spray booth. The fire quickly spread to the third floor where it ignited a pile of celluloid. The fire was discovered by Roy Paddison, a foreman in the case department. The fire department arrived at the scene quickly but the low water pressure of their hoses meant that the water spray could not reach the fire to properly extinguish it. Many key patterns, office records and small equipment items were rescued from the blaze, but the fire destroyed the building. Due to the expensive repairs required, the company decided not to rebuild at Carden Street and instead relocated operations to 167 Suffolk Street. |
