Notes |
Historic Context - Biltmore Mad Hatters Guelph's first Jr. A club, the Guelph Bitlmores, was sponsored by the Guelph Biltmore Hat Company in 1948 with R. Dawson as president, Roy Mason as manager and Joe Veroni as trainer. The "Mad Hatters" as they were known, enjoyed much success winning the OHA championships in 1949-50, 1951-52, and 1956-57. The 1951-52 squad, coached by Alfie Pike, brought Guelph its first Memorial Cup, emblematic of junior hockey supremacy in Canada. Guelph's roster featured eight players who would go on to play in the NHL. Team captain Andy Bathgate and defenceman Harry Howell were also inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame, in 1978 and 1979 respectively. Bathgate played over 1000 NHL games primarily with the New York Rangers before finally hoisting the Stanley Cup with the Toronto Maple Leafs in 1964. Although Howell never won a Stanley Cup, at the time of his retirement he had played in more games than any other defenceman with 1581 between the NHL and WHA. Lou Fontinato, Dean Prentice, Ron Murphy, Bill McCreary, Ron Stewart and Aldo Guidolin would also play in the NHL over the course of their careers. |
