Notes |
Historic Context McCrae died at 1:30 am on the morning of 28 January 1918 of pneumonia in both lungs and meningitis. Arrangements were made to hold the funeral on 29 January 1918 at Wimereux Communal Cemetery. The funeral procession left No. 14 Hospital and made its way along main street of Wimereux across the river and up the hill to the cemetery. The coffin was draped with Union Jack as opposed to Canadian Red Ensign because John had died in a British hospital. Behind, John's coffin was his groom Private William Dodge who led Bonfire with John's boots reversed in the stirrups. Graves, pg 246-247. |
