Description |
A round pewter ornament with a maroon fabric tie at the top end. It is mounted (glued) on a piece of maroon cardboard with silver printing. At the bottom of the ornament is stamped Guelph. The cardboard reads; "Downtown Guelph/Blacksmith/Fountain/Collectors Limited Edition/Pewter Ornament" There is an image of a fountain statue, a figure standing at the top of the fountain structure. The Back reads, "The Blacksmith Fountain was given to the City in 1884 by J. B. Armstrong, one of Guelph's early industrialists who manufactured carriages. Its main feature is the bronze figure of a blacksmith. Recognized as a symbol of industry, the Blacksmith holds the traditional tools of the trade -- a long-handled mallet and a pair of tongs, and stand above an octagonal basin supported by a rococo cast-iron pedestal. eight rams' heads decorate the basin's rim. The base of the fountain is made of red granite from the Bay of Fundy. The Blacksmith stood in St. George's Square until 1922 when it was moved to Priory Square to enable street cars to move easily through St. George's Square. In 1980, it was finally erected in its present spot, nestled in the tress next to the Co-operators building on Macdonell Street. The statue was extensively restored in 1991." There is a drawing of the ornament on this side. The whole thing is in a resealable bag. |
