Description |
A round pewter ornament with a maroon fabric tie at the top end. It is mounted (glued) on a piece of maroon cardboard with silver printing. At the bottom of the ornament is stamped Guelph. The cardboard reads; "Downtown Guelph/Chalmers/United/Church/Collectors Limited Edition/Pewter Ornament" There is an image of a large church with two small spires. The Back reads, "Chalmers United Church on Quebec Street was constituted in 1868 by a group who had broken away from Knox Presbyterian Church, located to the west. They met in the County Court House until the present Church building was completed in 1871. Chalmers was designed by Toronto architects, Gundy and Langley, Mr. T. Dobbie was the masonry contractor and W. Grierson was the stone cutter. The facade was constructed of matched grey granite rather than the local limestone so widely used in the community. A new Christian Education wing was added in 1957, and extensive alterations were made to the interior in 1966. In 1961, Yvonne Williams, and internationally renowned artist designed and executed two Biblical windows in the narthex. The other four narthex windows, inspired by Handel's Messiah are the result of a collaborative effort between Ms Williams and Grace Coombes. These windows were completed in 1967." There is a drawing of the ornament on this side. The whole thing is in a resealable bag. |
