Artist Biography- Effie Smith Known by her artist's name of Effie Smith, Gertrude Euphemia Smith was born in Cumberland, Ontario in 1867, moving to Guelph with her family at the age of 10. She was artistically inclined, playing the organ for 15 years at St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church, where her father, Rev. E.J. Smith, was the minister. She later played the organ at the Congregational Church on Norfolk Street. Smith attended Guelph Collegiate Vocational Institute in Guelph before continuing her art education in Hamilton and then later Chicago. Her initial focus was on the art of China painting, but she was forced to change her focus. The dye she used for China painting was made in Europe, but production of the dye halted because of World War II. She then switched her focus to floral arrangements, creating pieces in oil, watercolours, and pastels. By 1952, Smith had completed more than 1500 paintings, and she was an internationally recognized artist. Smith was also an early member of the Guelph Painters Group, a group that eventually merged with others to form the Guelph Creative Arts Association. Smith continued to paint late into her life, stopping shortly before her death on 16 July 1960. Updated 2023 |
