Artist Biography Joseph Charles Clapinson was born 19 April 1905 in England to James and Patricia Clapinson. Joseph lived in London, before immigrating to Canada in 1927. Jospeh married Doris Eve Reeve on 4 May 1929 in Toronto, Ontario. Together they had a daughter, Patrica. The family lived for some time in Toronto. Doris died on 14 May 1969 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Around the 1970s, Clapinson moved to the Guelph area and nearby Elora for a time. Guelph Museums holds five of Clapinson's paintings of local landscapes completed in 1977. One painting held by the Welington County Museum was completed in 1976. It is suggested that Clapinson lived on the main street of Elora while his house in Guelph was being finished, likely in the 1970s. A Clappinson is listed in the 1977 Guelph City Directory as living at 98 Harvard Road with his wife, Elsie M. Clapinson displayed his work at the Wellington County Museum and Archives in the 1970s or 1980s and received press coverage at that time. He died in Poole, Dorset, England, on 11 June 1994. Joseph Clapinson is buried in York Mills, Toronto. Updated 2025 |
