British War Medal issued to Norman Wallace after his service in World War One. British War Medal belonging to Major Norman Wallace. The medal is silver and one side has the coinage head of King George V with the legend "Georgius V Britt. Omn.. Rex Et Ind. Imp." On the other side is George on horseback trampling on the skull of the Central Powers. At the foot is a skull and cross bones and a rising sun above with "1914-1918" around the border and "Hon. Major N.C. Wallace" impressed along the edge. The medal has a silver ribbon bar across the top and woven through the bar is a ribbon with orange, blue, black, and white bands. Norman Clyde Wallace was born 5 July 1870 in Alma to James C. Wallace MD (1934-1913) and Abigail Higinbotham (1833-1905). He married Margaret Alice Higinbotham (1874-1970) on 15 July 1913 in Victoria, BC. Norman signed his Officers' Declaration Paper as Captain with Canadian Army Medical Corp. He served at Queens Canadian Military Hospital in Beachborough, then at hospitals in Hastings, Eastbourne and Seaford. Norman was discharged on 19 September 1919. After returning home, he continued his medical practice and served as Chairman of the Board of Health in Guelph for several years. He died on 3 February 1947 and is buried in Woodlawn Cemetery Guelph. |

Historic Context - British War Medal The British War Medal is a military service medal which were issued to most soldiers who fought during World War I. Approximately 6.5 million British War Medals (1914-1920) were issued in silver with an additional 110,000 bronze medals issued to people in various labour corps. The British War Medal was also issued for some organizations after 1918 Armistice, largely for services in Russia and mine-sweeping operations. All British War Medals have impressed names in small. |
