Historic Context: Imperial Biscuit Company Limited John Martin Dooley (1868-1954) was a longtime baker in Guelph. He married Mary Emerentia (Crawley) Dooley (1871-1957) in 1896. They had at least four children, Edna (b. 1897), Henry Kavanagh (b. 1901) Loyola (1902-1964), and John (b. 1909). The family lived at 33 Liverpool Street. John started as a baker between 1893 and 1896 when he was a part of Dooley and Scanlan bakery at 16 West Market Square (West Market Square also known as Wilson Street). In 1903 he was the manager of Victoria Biscuit Company and owned a grocery at 8-12 Wilson Street. By 1905, Dooley operated Imperial Biscuit Company Limited and his grocery store at the Wilson Street location. By the 1930s, Imperial Biscuit Company only occupied 12 Wilson Street. Wyndham Shop Antiques occupied 8-10 in 1957. Dooley continued to operate his biscuit factory until his death in 1954. Ideal Bakery took over part of the building while the other half was vacant. In 1963, John G Dooley (Possibly John's son) operated a real estate business out of the location. By 1969, the former building became a parking lot. Updated 2024 |
