Steel Bars for Testing During Tempering of Steel |
Description |
Two steel bars used for testing during the tempering of steel. Contained in a case of wood and leather. 1 & 2 Two steel bars; 1 is silver coloured and 2 is a blue-purple colour. Both have "J.B. Armstrong" incised near one end. 3. Wood and leather case. Case holds both steel bars, one on each side of a flat wooden core making up 1/3 of the thickness of the case. A piece of leather equal in thickness to the wood is fastened on either side of the wood core, leaving a slot of sufficient size to accommodate one steel bar on either side of the wood. Viewed from the narrow edge 3 layers are obvious; medium brown wood in centre and darker reddish-brown leather on both sides. Viewed from wider side, one end is rounded the other end is square and open, the leather sides are cut down slightly in semi-circles in the centre of the square edge to provide better access to the steel bars. 4. Cover for open end of case. Opening in cover is same dimensions as outside dimension of open end of case. Cover slips over open end of case. Constructed of wood and leather, wood core is about 3/5" total thickness. Leather sides are about 1/5 thickness each. Edges of wood and leather are tapered in around opening of cover. Closed end of cover is rounded like closed end of case. |
